Cetirizine Is Widely Used For Allergic Disorders In Childhood.

Cetirizine is a second-generation selective antihistamine widely used in an oral formulation for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Local administration of cetirizine has been shown to reduce symptoms after allergen challenge, and has the potential to shorten the time to onset and decrease systemic side effects. Cetirizine is commonly used to treat sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and other allergy symptoms. The drug can also be used to treat itching due to hives (which may or not be caused by allergies). Cetirizine is predominantly bound to plasma proteins in humans.

Cetirizine is widely used for allergic disorders in childhood. It is without central nervous system side effects at recommended dosages. Cetirizine is metabolized to a limited extent by oxidative to a metabolite with negligible antihistaminic activity. The enzyme or enzymes responsible for this metabolism have not been identified.

Cetirizine is also a weak inducer of SCEs. Further studies are now warranted in order to define the invivo cytogenetic activity of cetirizine in humans. Cetirizine may also be used for other purposes. Cetirizine is the generic name. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Cetirizine is rapidly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract after oral administration with peak plasma levels after a 10mg dose are approximately 300ng/mL and occur about one hour after dosing. The onset of activity occurs within 20 to 60 minutes and persists for at least 24 hours following a single dose. Cetirizine is potent, third generation selective H blocker, used extensively in both children and adults. It inhibits eosinophil accumulation and migration. It is a second-generation H1-receptor antagonist antihistamine and works by blocking H1 histamine receptors.

Cetirizine is also available in combination with pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others). This monograph only includes information about the use of cetirizine alone. Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Cetirizine is not effectively removed by dialysis, and dialysis will be ineffective unless a dialyzable agent has been concomitantly ingested.
